My name is Mason Brock. I am a botanist who specializes in native plants of the United States, particularly in the Southeast. There's a lot left to discover in the world of plants, particularly in poorly-botanized states such as Kentucky (where I'm from). New species are still being described in the south on a regular basis, usually multiple times a year. It's a big world out there.

I'm also interested in branching out into Asian flora. On a recent trip to Japan, I was surprised at how familiar much of what I saw was, at least at the genus level.

I'm currently the manager of the Austin Peay State University Herbarium, in Clarksville, Tennessee.

My photos can be found in this gallery.

In order to give the best representation of these species in their typical form, all of my photographs are of uncultivated plants in their natural habitat. This means I pass up invasive species. And as easy as it would be to photograph rare species in the native plant garden at the university where I work, the species are instead sought out in the wild. (Cultivated plants can look downright weird compared to their wild-growing populations.) Since I regularly make scientific plant collections for our herbarium, I often find myself encountering interesting plants in the wild.

Some of my favorite photos (one from each year):
